エーラーワンの祠
Erawan Shrine
エーラーワン・ホテルのブラフマー神の祠 あるいは単にエーラーワン（エラワン）の祠と呼ばれる祠は、バンコク中心部に立つグランドハイアットエラワンホテルの中にあり、ブラフマー（梵天）をまつるヒンドゥー教・上座部仏教の祠である。「エーラーワン」と名前にはあるがエーラーワンの語源であるアイラーヴァタはまつられていない。中国人・華人・華僑らによって四面仏と呼ばれるが仏ではない。日本語ではエラワン・プームとも呼ばれているが、翻訳すると「土地のアイラーヴァタ」という意味不明な単語であり、またタイ語でもこのように呼ばれない。
Erawan Shrine
The shrine sits at a busy central intersection and centers on a gold statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai depiction of Brahma. It's an active place of worship, not a museum piece: visitors come to pray, make offerings, and watch or commission the resident Thai classical dancers who perform on request as a form of thanks for granted wishes. The contrast between the small open-air shrine and the traffic and skyscrapers around it is part of what makes it worth a stop, especially if you want to see everyday Thai religious practice rather than a temple complex set apart from the city.
Getting there
The shrine is at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok, right outside the Chidlom and Siam shopping corridor. The easiest approach is the BTS Skytrain to Chit Lom station, followed by a short walk of a few minutes along the covered skywalk. From most central Bangkok hotels, this puts it within 15-30 minutes door to door depending on your starting point and BTS connections. Taxis can also reach it directly, though the intersection has heavy traffic for much of the day.
How long to stay
Most visitors spend 15-30 minutes here, enough time to walk around the statue, observe or take part in the offerings, and watch a dance performance if one is happening.
When to go
The shrine can get crowded, particularly with tour groups in the late morning and early afternoon, and around Thai and Chinese holidays when it draws heavy local worship. Early morning tends to be quieter. Because it sits at street level next to a major road junction, expect traffic noise regardless of when you visit.
Combine it with
Its location makes it easy to pair with shopping: Pratunam Market is about 0.7km away, and Baiyoke Tower II and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre are both roughly 1.1km. Jim Thompson House, a restored teak house museum, is about 1.4km away and works well as a slower-paced follow-up stop.
