Phaya Thai Palace
The Phya Thai Palace or Royal Phya Thai Palace is on the banks of the Samsen Canal on Rajavithee Road in the Ratchathewi District of Bangkok. King Rama V bestowed on it the royal name of the Royal Residence of the Phya Thai or the Phya Thai Palace, with Phya Thai meaning "lord of the Thais", during his reign and so it was built with this bearing on design.

Phaya Thai Palace began as a royal residence built for King Rama V on the banks of the Samsen Canal, and it later served different institutional roles over the twentieth century, including a period as part of a hospital complex. Visitors come mainly to see the palace's European-influenced architecture and the throne hall buildings, which stand out from the surrounding modern medical campus. It's a stop for people interested in Thai royal history and Bangkok's turn-of-the-century architecture rather than a typical "grand palace" experience.
Getting there
The palace sits on Rajavithee Road in Ratchathewi District, close to central Bangkok. The nearest BTS station is Victory Monument, about 0.7km away, making it a short walk or a quick taxi or tuk-tuk ride from there. From most central Bangkok hotels, allow roughly 20-30 minutes by BTS plus a short walk, or longer by road depending on traffic.
How much time to allow
An hour or two is usually enough to walk through the grounds and view the main buildings, especially since parts of the site remain in active use by the hospital.
When to go
Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking around outdoors. As with most outdoor sites in Bangkok, the rainy season (roughly June to October) can disrupt visits, so checking the weather beforehand is worthwhile. The site does not draw the large tourist crowds of Bangkok's more famous palaces.
Combine it with
Victory Monument (0.7km) is the most convenient nearby stop, useful as a transit hub or for food nearby. Suan Pakkad Palace (1.4km), another former royal residence now open to visitors, pairs well thematically. Chitralada Royal Villa (1.3km) is close by as well, though it functions as a working royal residence with limited public access. Baiyoke Tower II (1.8km) is a reasonable add-on if you want a contrasting view of modern Bangkok from height.
