Kan-irag Nature Park

Kan-irag Nature Park

The Kan-irag Nature Park is a watershed and nature park in the uplands of Cebu City, Philippines that opened in the mid-2000s. It was once a bald mountain, but due to reforestation with native trees, the area became a functioning watershed. It is home to about 27 native bird species, such as the emerald dove, Asian glossy starling, the collared kingfisher, the black-naped oriole, and the olive-backed sunbird. The park's size is 71 hectares.

What it is

Kan-irag Nature Park is a reforested watershed in the hills above Cebu City. The land was once a bald, deforested mountain; decades of planting with native tree species turned it back into a working forest that now helps supply water to the city below. The main draw is birdwatching and quiet walking among the trees — the park is home to around 27 native bird species, including the emerald dove, Asian glossy starling, collared kingfisher, black-naped oriole, and olive-backed sunbird. At 71 hectares, it's a low-key spot for people who want greenery and fresh air rather than a manicured garden or theme-park-style attraction.

Getting there

The park sits in Cebu City's uplands, away from the coastal downtown area. From the city centre, expect a drive of roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car or hired van, longer if traffic through the lowland barangays is heavy. There's no direct public transport route to the gate, so most visitors arrange a private vehicle, habal-habal (motorcycle taxi), or a tour that includes transport.

How much time to allow

Plan for at least half a day once you include travel time. Inside the park itself, two to three hours is enough for a walk along the main trails and some birdwatching, though keen birders may want longer.

When to go

Go in the morning, when birds are most active and the uphill roads are easier to navigate in daylight. Dry season is more comfortable for walking, since the upland trails can get muddy and slippery after rain. This is not a heavily touristed site, so crowding isn't a major concern.

Combining with nearby sights

  • Mount Manunggal (7.6 km) — a nearby upland site that pairs naturally with a Kan-irag visit given the short distance.
  • Cebu Taoist Temple (8.2 km) and Cebu City Philippines Temple (9.1 km) — both feasible as a stop on the way back down toward the city.
  • SM J Mall (10.9 km) — a convenient option for food or shopping once you're back in the lowland part of the city.
