Olango Island

オランゴ島

The Olango Island Group is a group of islands found in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. It comprises Olango island and 6 satellite islets namely: Caubian, Camungi, Caohagan, Gilutongan, Nalusuan, Pangan-an, and Sulpa. The island group has a total land area of approximately 1,030 hectares. It is divided under the jurisdiction of the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova, Cebu. It lies 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) east of Mactan and is a major tourist destination in Cebu. It is known for its wildlife sanctuary. The entire area is the first declared Ramsar Wetland Site in the P...

What it is

Olango Island sits just off Mactan and anchors a small group of islets that make up the Olango Island Group. The main draw is the wildlife sanctuary on its southern end, a mangrove and mudflat area that hosts migratory shorebirds — it's the first site in the Philippines listed under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. Beyond birdwatching, the surrounding waters and reef flats are the reason people come out here, with boat trips to nearby islets like Nalusuan and Caohagan for snorkeling.

Getting there

From Cebu City or Mactan's tourist belt, you'll head to a coastal barangay on Mactan (commonly Sta. Rosa) to catch an outrigger boat across the channel. Total travel time from central Cebu is usually a little over an hour including the short crossing, depending on traffic getting across the bridges to Mactan.

Time to allow

A half day covers the sanctuary and a look around the island itself. If you're combining it with a boat trip to one or two satellite islets for snorkeling, plan on a full day.

When to go

Mornings tend to have calmer seas for the boat crossing. If birdwatching is the goal, the migratory season (roughly September through April) is when shorebird numbers are highest; outside that window the sanctuary is quieter and less of a draw. Weekends can bring more day-trippers on the boats out to the islets.

Combining with nearby sights

The wider Olango Island Group area (0.8km) is effectively the same trip. The Magellan Monument (6.7km), Liberty Shrine (6.8km), and Lapulapu Monument (6.8km) are all clustered together on Mactan and can be seen on the way to or from the boat launch point, making for a natural pairing with a morning or afternoon on the water.
