Hoi An Museum

Hoi An Museum

The Hội An Museum, also known as the Hội An Museum of History and Culture, is a history museum located at 10B Trần Hưng Đạo, Hội An, Vietnam. It was founded in 1989.

What it is

Hội An Museum, also called the Museum of History and Culture, covers the town's development from early settlement through the trading-port era to the present. Exhibits include ceramics, coins, everyday objects and photographs tied to Hội An's role as a port town. It's a useful stop if you want context on the wooden shophouses and temples you'll see elsewhere in the old town, though the displays are modest compared to a national-level museum.

Getting there

The museum sits at 10B Trần Hưng Đạo, inside Hội An's old town, so if you're staying in the old quarter it's a walk of a few minutes. From Đà Nẵng city centre, it's roughly 30-40 minutes by taxi or car, and a bit longer by bus. Once in Hội An, the old town is largely pedestrian-friendly, so walking or a bicycle is the easiest way to move between sights.

How long to spend

Most visitors get through the museum in 30-45 minutes. It's a compact space, so it works well as a short break between other old-town sights rather than a half-day destination on its own.

When to go

Being indoors, it's a reasonable option during the midday heat or on a rainy afternoon, both common in Hội An's climate. The old town overall gets busy in the late afternoon and evening when lantern displays draw crowds, so visiting the museum earlier in the day tends to be quieter.

Combine it with

  • Museum of Trade Ceramics (0.2km) - close enough to visit right after, and thematically related.
  • Museum of Sa Huynh Culture (0.4km) - a short walk, useful if you're interested in the region's earlier history.
  • Japanese Bridge (0.4km) - one of Hội An's best-known landmarks, easily combined with a museum walk.
  • Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum (0.6km) - a bit further but still walkable, worth adding if you have time for a longer loop through the old town.

The Museum of Trade Ceramics is located in Hoi An, central Vietnam. It is a museum showcasing the origins and history of the town and the region in the context of historic trade and relationships with foreign nations such as China, India, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. The building housing the museum is itself an attractively restored traditional wooden house of Hoi An's old quarter, which, on account of design similarity and a historically significant local Japanese trading community, is likened to those of Kyoto.
