Orsanmichele
오르산미켈레(Orsanmichele) 는 이탈리아 도시 피렌체의 성당이다. 이 성당은 본래 산 미켈레 수도원의 텃밭이 있던 자리에 세워졌다.
What it is
Orsanmichele began as a grain market and granary before becoming a church, and its exterior still reflects that layered history. Its main draw is the sculpture on the four outer walls: statues of patron saints commissioned by Florence's major guilds, including figures by Ghiberti and Donatello, set into niches from the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside, the highlight is the marble tabernacle by Andrea Orcagna, an elaborate Gothic shrine framing a painted image of the Virgin.
Getting there
Orsanmichele sits in the historic centre, an easy walk from most central hotels. From Piazza del Duomo it's about 5 minutes on foot; from Santa Maria Novella train station, roughly 10-15 minutes walking through pedestrian streets. There's no need for a taxi or bus within this part of the city.
How much time to allow
Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes looking at the exterior statues and stepping inside to see the tabernacle and the church interior. Add extra time if the upper floors or museum spaces are open during your visit, as those hold additional guild statues and can take another 30 minutes or so.
When to go
Because it sits between Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo, foot traffic on the street outside is heavy for much of the day. Early morning tends to be quieter for viewing the exterior sculptures without crowds blocking the view. The building itself is compact, so even a modest number of visitors inside can feel busy.
What to combine it with
The location makes it simple to pair with other central sights: Piazza della Signoria and the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo are both about 0.1km away, and Piazza della Repubblica is the same short distance in the other direction. Palazzo Davanzati, a preserved medieval merchant's house, is about 0.2km away and works well as a next stop for those interested in Florence's guild and merchant history.
