피나코테카 디 브레라

Pinacoteca di Brera

What it is

The Pinacoteca di Brera is Milan's main painting gallery, housed in the same palazzo as the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. The collection focuses on Italian painting from the 13th to the 20th century, with strong holdings of Renaissance and Baroque work. Visitors typically come for the depth of the Italian collection rather than for a single famous piece, though the museum does hold works by well-known Italian masters.

Getting there

The gallery sits in the Brera district, within walking distance of Milan's historic centre. From Piazza del Duomo, it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk, or a short metro ride (M2 or M3 lines to a nearby station) followed by a few minutes on foot. If arriving from Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN) airport, plan on connecting through central Milan first, as neither airport has a direct link to Brera.

How much time to allow

Most visitors spend one and a half to two and a half hours inside, depending on how closely they look at the paintings. Those with a strong interest in art history may want closer to three hours.

When to go

Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons. Weekends and Italian public holidays draw larger crowds, as does the surrounding Brera neighbourhood generally, which is popular for its cafes and boutiques. If you prefer a quieter visit, an early weekday slot is a safer bet.

What to combine it with

The Brera Astronomical Observatory shares the same building, making it an easy add-on with no travel time required. The Basilica of San Simpliciano is a short 0.3km walk away, and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, a smaller house museum with decorative arts and paintings, is about 0.5km away. La Scala, the opera house, is also roughly 0.5km away and can be combined with a walk through the Brera district on the way.
