Capitoline Museums
カピトリーノ美術館 は、イタリアのローマにある公立の美術館である。ローマの7つの丘の1つ、カピトリーノの丘に建つこの美術館は、ローマ市の「首都ローマ博物館システム」構想に含まれる。1734年に一般市民に公開され、芸術を展示する美術館として企画した世界で初めての施設と考えられる。また18世紀から「カピトリーノ美術館」という名称は複数の建物を総称してきた。
What it is
The Capitoline Museums occupy Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo, facing each other across Piazza del Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill. The collections cover ancient Roman sculpture, Renaissance and Baroque painting, and archaeological finds from the city's history — the kind of civic art collection that predates most modern museums. It's a reasonable stop if you want Roman-era sculpture and a sense of Rome's civic identity without the crowds of the Vatican museums.
Getting there
The museums sit right above the Roman Forum and Piazza Venezia, in the historic centre. From most central Rome locations you can walk there in 10-20 minutes; the Piazza Venezia bus/tram stops are a short walk up the Capitoline Hill steps (the Cordonata) to the square.
Time to allow
Plan on at least 2-3 hours to see both palazzi and the underground gallery connecting them, longer if you want to linger over the sculpture halls or the painting collections.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer than afternoons. It draws fewer crowds than the Colosseum or Vatican, but tour groups still pass through, especially around midday in high season (spring through early autumn).
Combine it with
- Roman Forum (0.2km) and the Arch of Septimius Severus (0.2km) — the museums overlook the Forum, making this a natural pairing.
- Temple of Saturn (0.1km), visible from the same viewpoint above the Forum.
- Altare della Patria (0.2km), a short walk down toward Piazza Venezia.
