Sistine Chapel
What it is
The Sistine Chapel is the pope's private chapel inside the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, built under Pope Sixtus IV in the late 15th century. Visitors go for the frescoes: Michelangelo's ceiling and his Last Judgment on the altar wall, along with wall paintings by Botticelli, Perugino, and other Renaissance masters. It's still used for papal conclaves.
Getting there
Entry is through the Vatican Museums, about a 15-20 minute walk from St. Peter's Square. From central Rome, the Ottaviano or Cipro metro stops (Line A) are roughly a 10-minute walk from the museum entrance; several bus lines also stop nearby. If flying in, the city is served by Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) airports, both connected to central Rome by train or bus.
How much time to allow
The chapel itself is one room, but reaching it means walking through the Vatican Museums, which is extensive. Plan at least half a day if you want to see the museum galleries en route rather than rushing straight to the chapel.
When to go
The chapel is consistently crowded, especially the closer you get to midday. Early morning, right when the museums open, tends to be calmer, as does going late in the day when the schedule allows. Summer months and weekends bring the heaviest crowds; the space is enclosed and can feel warm and packed at peak times. Silence is generally requested inside the chapel.
What to combine it with
The Sistine Chapel sits within a cluster of major sights, so it's easy to combine with a single visit: St. Peter's Basilica and the Apostolic Palace are both about 0.1-0.2km away, Saint Peter's Square is a couple of minutes' walk, and the rest of the Vatican Museums (0.4km) can be explored on the same ticket before or after seeing the chapel.
