Araiyama
Araiyama is a forested hill on the western edge of central Sapporo, rising above the Maruyama district. It's a walking and hiking spot rather than a sightseeing landmark — trails climb through mixed forest to viewpoints looking back over the city, and it draws locals more than tour groups. It works well as a short nature outing without leaving the city.
Getting there
The easiest approach is via the Maruyama Park area, reachable by subway from central Sapporo in around 15-20 minutes. From the station it's a further walk of 15-20 minutes to reach a trailhead, so allow roughly 30-40 minutes door to door from the city centre.
Time to allow
A round trip on the main trail takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours at a moderate pace, depending on how far you go and how long you linger at viewpoints.
When to go
- Go earlier in the day for cooler temperatures and better light for city views.
- Trails can be muddy or icy outside the warmer months, so check conditions if visiting in late autumn through spring.
- Weekends see more local hikers and dog walkers than weekdays, though it rarely feels crowded compared to central Sapporo's main attractions.
Combine with
The area is dense with cultural stops within easy walking distance: the Hongō Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture (0.5km) and Miyanomori International Museum of Art (1km) both suit a quiet gallery visit before or after the walk, while Mount Sankaku (0.8km) offers another short trail nearby if you want more hiking. Sapporo Maruyama Zoo (1.2km) is close enough to add on for families splitting the day between nature and animals.
