Gásir

Gásir is the site of a former trading post located on the shores of Eyjafjörður. Now consisting of ruins, this location is designated as an Icelandic cultural heritage site. Visitors go here to see the remains of one of the oldest trading centers in Iceland and to observe the coastal landscape of the north.

Getting There

The site is located north of Akureyri city centre. It is accessible by car via the local road network. The drive from the centre typically takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Visit Duration

Because the site consists of open-air ruins and historical markers, most visitors spend between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours exploring the grounds.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to the elements, making it most accessible during the summer months when roads are clear of snow. It does not typically experience heavy crowds, though it is best to visit during daylight hours for visibility of the ruins.
