About Hlíðarfjall

Hlíðarfjall is a mountain located roughly 6 kilometers west of Akureyri. It hosts Iceland's second-largest ski resort, serving as a regional hub for downhill skiing and snowboarding. During non-winter months, the slopes are used by hikers exploring the terrain.

Getting There

The base is approximately a 10 to 15-minute drive from central Akureyri by car or taxi. Travellers arriving at Akureyri Airport (AEY) can reach the mountain in around 15 to 20 minutes.

Time to Spend

Skiers and snowboarders typically allocate a half-day or a full day on the slopes. For hiking or sightseeing during the summer, plan to spend between 2 and 4 hours.

When to Visit

Winter brings the main operating season for snow sports, dependent on snow coverage. The slopes get noticeably crowded on weekends and during school holidays, making weekday mornings the best option for avoiding lines. Summer is suitable for daytime trail walking.
