El Max
What It Is
El Max is a coastal fishing neighborhood in western Alexandria. Built along canals connecting Lake Mariout to the Mediterranean, the area features rows of modest waterfront houses and docked wooden boats. Travellers visit to see working maritime life, walk along the canal paths, and observe neighborhood fish stalls.
Getting There
The area is located west of central Alexandria. A taxi or rideshare from the city centre takes approximately 20 to 35 minutes depending on traffic along the coastal route.
Time to Allow
Plan for 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to walk along the main canal banks, take in the atmosphere, and explore the immediate street markets.
When to Go
Late afternoon offers cooler temperatures and active boat movement as fishermen return with their catch. Summer middays can be uncomfortably hot and humid. The narrow streets around the market areas can become crowded, particularly in the evenings and on weekends.

You can combine a visit with several destinations located a short drive away:
- Lake Mariout (4 km)
- Ras el-Tin Palace (4 km)
- Heptastadion (4.5 km)
