Roman Theatre of Amman
Overview
Built in the 2nd century during the Roman period, this amphitheatre in downtown Amman was cut into a hillside to seat roughly 6,000 people. Travellers visit to examine its intact stone seating, observe Roman acoustic design, and view the downtown area from the upper tiers.
Getting There
Located in the downtown (Al-Balad) area, the site is a 5- to 10-minute walk from central downtown streets. Taxis and rideshare vehicles can drop passengers off directly at the plaza in front of the entrance.
Time to Spend
Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. This provides sufficient time to explore the stage area, climb the seating rows, and visit the small museum rooms built into the structure.
When to Visit
Early morning and late afternoon offer cooler temperatures and avoid harsh midday sun, as the stone structure has little shade. Tour groups are common around midday. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable weather for climbing the steep steps.
