Defence Line of Amsterdam

The Defence Line of Amsterdam is a ring of fortifications forming a ring approximately 20 km around the city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of forts and a system of inundation zones designed to protect the city through controlled flooding. Travellers visit to explore the military architecture and walk along the old defenses to see the outskirts of the city.

Getting There

The fortifications are spread across a wide area surrounding the city. Depending on which specific fort or section of the line you visit, you can reach the sites via local trains, buses, or by renting a bicycle from the city centre. Travel time varies by location but typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.

Time Allocation

Because the site is a vast network rather than a single building, the time required depends on your itinerary. Allow 3 to 4 hours if visiting a single fort and a section of the perimeter, or a full day if exploring multiple points of the line.

When to Visit

The outdoor nature of the site makes it most accessible during the spring and summer months. Visiting during the morning hours allows for quieter exploration of the walking paths. The site does not experience the same density of crowds as the central city districts.

Nearby Attractions

While the fortifications are located on the outskirts, you can combine a trip to the line with visits to central landmarks upon returning to the city centre, including:

  • Nieuwe Kerk (0.1km from centre)
  • Dam Square (0.2km from centre)
  • Oude Kerk (0.3km from centre)
  • De Wallen (0.4km from centre)
