Overview

Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of Turkey. Travellers visit to understand modern Turkish history, view the monumental architecture, and see the memorial hall and ceremonial courtyard.

Getting There

The site sits about 2 kilometres west of central Ankara. From Kızılay, a taxi ride takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Alternatively, taking the light rail (Ankaray) to Anadolu station requires an additional 10-minute walk to the entrance.

Time to Allow

Allow 2 to 3 hours to walk the grounds, visit the Hall of Honour, and explore the museum galleries located beneath the monument.

When to Go

Mornings offer cooler conditions and fewer tour groups. The open stone courtyards provide little shade, making summer afternoons hot. Expect large crowds during weekends and significant national holidays.
