Overview

Ankara Castle is a hilltop fortress overlooking the city. Used as a stronghold through the Roman, Byzantine, and Seljuk eras, it took its current form after Ottoman renovations in 1832. Travellers go to examine the stone ramparts, walk through the residential streets inside the citadel, and view the surrounding city from above.

Getting There

From central Ankara, take the metro to Ulus station or take a taxi to the base of the hill. Reaching the gate requires an uphill walk along cobbled lanes. Total travel time from the city centre is roughly 20 to 30 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 2 hours on site. This provides sufficient time to explore the walls, walk the inner alleys, and take in the viewpoints.

When to Visit

Late afternoon is suitable for cooler temperatures and sunset views. The site gets crowded on weekends and public holidays. Midday in summer brings high heat with little shade along the ramparts, making spring and autumn more comfortable seasons to visit.
