Mihintale is a mountain site near Anuradhapura recognized as the location where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. Visitors go here to explore ancient Buddhist ruins and religious monuments, which are accessed by climbing a series of stone steps leading up the hillside.

Getting There

The site is located outside the center of Anuradhapura. Most travelers reach it via tuk-tuk or hired vehicle. The journey from the city center typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and the specific starting point.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 3 to 5 hours to visit. This provides enough time to climb the stairs to the summit, explore the various stupas and ruins, and descend back to the base.

When to Visit

Early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as much of the exploration happens outdoors on exposed stone paths. The site becomes crowded during the Poson Poya festival in June, which commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in the country.
