Maungawhau / Mount Eden

This site is a dormant volcanic hill and the highest point in the Auckland volcanic field. Visitors go here to see the volcanic crater and view the Auckland city skyline from the summit.

Getting There

From the Auckland city centre, you can reach the site via public bus or by car. The journey typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk from the parking area or bus stop to the summit and back, including time to observe the crater and the surrounding views.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon provides the clearest light for viewing the city. The site is accessible year-round, though wind levels are higher at the summit. It can get crowded during weekends and public holidays.
