Overview

Ōtāhuhu / Mount Richmond is a crater hill in the Auckland volcanic field. The summit and slopes preserve visible archaeological remnants of a pre-European Māori fortified settlement, including cultivation terraces. Visitors come to see these indigenous earthworks and observe local volcanic geology within a public park.

Getting There

From central Auckland, driving takes about 20 to 30 minutes via State Highway 1. By public transit, taking the Southern Line train or a bus toward Otahuhu takes 35 to 50 minutes, followed by a short walk to the park.

Time to Allow

Allow 45 to 60 minutes to walk up to the summit, explore the crater edges, and view the terracing.

When to Visit

Go during daylight for clear visibility of the archaeological features. Avoid visiting directly after heavy rain, as unpaved grassy paths can get slippery. The park is rarely crowded.
