Puketutu Island

Overview

Puketutu Island is a volcanic landform in Manukau Harbour, part of the Auckland volcanic field. A causeway connects it to the mainland, allowing pedestrian access for coastal walking, harbour views, and birdwatching in a quiet setting.

Getting There

From central Auckland, driving south toward Māngere takes approximately 25 to 40 minutes by car. The site is located north of Auckland Airport (AKL). Reaching it by public transit requires taking a train or bus to Onehunga or Māngere and transferring to a local bus or taxi, taking about 60 to 90 minutes.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours to walk across the causeway and explore the coastal path.

When to Visit

Choose clear, calm days. Because the paths are exposed to open harbour winds with little shelter, bad weather makes walking unpleasant. The location does not get crowded, though visits increase slightly on weekend mornings.

Nearby Attractions

Combine a visit with other regional volcanic sites:

  • Waitomokia (2.4km)
  • Māngere Mountain (3.7km)
  • Puketāpapa (6km)
  • Te Tātua a Riukiuta (7km)
