Local Transport Options
Axum is a compact city where the scale of movement is relatively small, as most major archaeological and religious sites are concentrated. The following modes are the primary ways to navigate the city:
- Walking: This is the most effective method for visiting the central area, including the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion and the main stelae fields. It wins for flexibility and avoiding traffic in the city center.
- Bajajs (Auto-rickshaws): These three-wheeled vehicles are the dominant form of short-distance transport. They win for speed and convenience when traveling between distant sites or navigating narrow streets where larger cars struggle.
- Taxis: Standard cars are available for longer trips or when carrying significant luggage. They are preferable for trips to the outskirts of the city or when weather conditions make open-air Bajajs impractical.
Airport to City Center
Axum Airport (AXU) is located a short distance from the urban core. Travelers typically choose between two options:
- Airport Taxis: Low effort and fast. These provide direct door-to-door service to your accommodation. Cost is in the mid-band compared to local transit.
- Local Bajajs: Higher effort as they may require more negotiation and offer less luggage space. These are the lowest cost option and take roughly the same amount of time.
Practical Navigation Notes
- Tickets and Passes: There are no integrated public transport passes or tickets in Axum. All fares for Bajajs and taxis are negotiated individually before the trip begins.
- Rush Hours: Traffic peaks during morning and late afternoon commutes, particularly around the central market and main intersections.
- Luggage: Bajajs have very limited space. If traveling with large suitcases, a full-sized taxi is necessary.
- Accessibility: Pavements are inconsistent. Many historic sites have uneven terrain, making wheelchair or stroller access challenging.
