How to visit Baikonur Cosmodrome for the first time

City layout and districts
Baikonur is not a typical city; it is a closed administrative entity. Think of it in two primary zones: the City Center, where residential blocks, shops, and administrative offices are located, and the Cosmodrome, the vast technical area where launches occur. The technical sites are spread across a massive territory, meaning you will spend most of your time traveling between the residential hub and distant launch pads.
Arrival and transportation
The primary gateway is Krayniy Airport (BXY). Upon arrival, you must coordinate your transport in advance, as the city is a restricted zone and spontaneous taxi hailing is unreliable for foreigners.
- Airport to City: Pre-arranged shuttles or authorized taxis are the only viable options.
- Getting Around: Once inside, the city is walkable, but the launch sites are not. You will require a licensed guide and a dedicated vehicle to access the space facilities, as independent movement outside the city center is restricted.
Common first-timer mistakes
The most frequent error is attempting to visit without a pre-approved permit. You cannot simply buy a ticket at the gate; access requires official clearance processed well in advance. Additionally, visitors often underestimate the scale of the site. Do not expect to see everything in a few hours; the distances between the assembly buildings and the launch pads are significant.
Suggested itinerary structure
For a first trip, prioritize the core historical and technical milestones:
- Priority: Visit the Gagarin launch pad (Site 1) and the Museum of Cosmonautics to understand the city's origins.
- Secondary: Explore the city's Soviet-era architecture and the local markets.
- Can Wait: Remote technical installations or secondary support sites, which are often inaccessible unless a specific launch window is open.
