Understanding the Layout

North Nicosia is structured around its historic core inside the northern half of the Venetian walls. The primary pedestrian spine runs along Arasta Street up to the Büyük Han caravanserai and the Selimiye Mosque, terminating north at the Kyrenia Gate. Outside these walls, modern Lefkoşa expands into commercial neighborhoods, centered around the lively Dereboyu avenue.

Arrival from Larnaca and Local Transit

Larnaca International Airport sits in the south. Take a scheduled airport shuttle bus to south Nicosia, then walk or take a taxi to the Ledra Street pedestrian crossing. After passport control at the UN buffer zone, you exit directly into the old town. Within the walled city, walking is the only necessary transport. For trips outside the walls or to Dereboyu, shared minibuses (dolmuş) depart from terminals near Kyrenia Gate, alongside local taxis.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting your passport: Crossing the buffer zone requires a valid passport each way. Keep it on you at all times.
  • Driving a rental car across: Southern rental car insurance typically does not cover the north. Crossing on foot at Ledra Street is significantly faster and hassle-free.
  • Relying only on cards: Turkish Lira is the official currency. Carry cash for small vendors, cafes, and minibuses.

A Sensible First Trip

Dedicate your initial hours to the walled city: explore the courtyards of Büyük Han, visit the Bandabuliya covered market, and trace the ramparts to Kyrenia Gate. Leave modern areas like Dereboyu for evening dining, and postpone excursions across the northern mountains until you are oriented.
