City Layout and Districts

Bridgetown is divided by the Careenage, a historic waterway flowing into the sea.

  • Downtown Core: Centered on Broad Street north of the water, this area houses commercial shops, banks, and National Heroes Square.
  • Carlisle Bay: Extending south of the harbor, this crescent bay features public beaches within walking distance of town.
  • The Garrison: Further south lies the UNESCO-listed military district, known for colonial architecture and the Garrison Savannah track.

Getting In and Around

Arriving at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), use the official taxi stand outside arrivals. Taxis use regulated zone rates arranged with the dispatcher.

The city center is compact and walkable. For outlying areas, public transport leaves from two main terminals: blue government buses, yellow minibuses, and white ZR vans cover the coast.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wearing camouflage clothing: Camouflage print is strictly illegal for civilians in Barbados and is confiscated by authorities.
  • Visiting on Sundays: As a commercial center, most downtown businesses and historic sites close Saturday afternoon and remain shut all Sunday.
  • Expecting a beachfront downtown: The city center is a working port; head south to Carlisle Bay for swimming and coastal leisure.

Sensible First-Trip Plan

Spend your first morning around the Careenage and Parliament Buildings before midday heat. In the afternoon, walk south to the Garrison or Carlisle Bay. Save distant spots like the rugged East Coast for later days once you know the bus routes.
