Benoa Bay

Benoa Bay

What it is

Benoa Bay is a wide, shallow inlet in southeastern Bali, sheltered from the open sea and lined with mangrove forest on its inner edges. It functions as a working harbor for fishing and tour boats, a mooring point for cruise and ferry traffic, and the center of Bali's water sports scene, with operators along the Tanjung Benoa peninsula offering jet skiing, parasailing, banana boats and short mangrove boat trips. Travellers come here less for scenery to look at and more for things to do on the water, or to catch a boat toward Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida.

Getting there

The bay sits close to Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), only about 10-15 minutes away by car. From central Denpasar, expect roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, and a similar drive from Nusa Dua or Sanur.

How much time to allow

A quick look at the harbor takes under an hour, but if you're booking water sports or a mangrove tour, plan for two to three hours including transfer and setup time at the operator counters.

When to go

Mornings tend to have calmer, flatter water, which suits jet skiing and parasailing better than the afternoon chop. The area gets busy with tour groups and boat traffic, so arriving early helps avoid queues at the water sports docks.

Combine it with

  • Satya Dharma Temple (4.3km)
  • Pura Dalem Sakenan (4.5km)
  • Museum Pasifika (5.4km)
  • Pantai Kuta (5.8km)

These are all a short drive away and can be grouped into a half-day loop with Benoa Bay.
