Navigating Banjul

Banjul is situated on Saint Mary's Island, meaning the city is compact and geographically separated from the mainland. Most movement within the city center is straightforward, while travel to the coast or the mainland requires specific transport modes.

Primary Modes of Transport

  • Taxis: The most common choice for visitors. They are ideal for direct trips across the island or navigating to government buildings and markets.
  • Shared Taxis/Minibuses: These are the primary means for budget travel and for those commuting between Banjul and the larger hub of Serekunda on the mainland.
  • Walking: Due to the small size of the island, walking is viable for short distances within the city center, provided you are prepared for the tropical heat.

Airport to City Transfers

Banjul International Airport (BJL) is located outside the city limits. Travelers have the following options:

  • Private Taxis: The fastest and lowest-effort option. They provide door-to-door service directly to your destination.
  • Airport Shuttles: A mid-range option in terms of cost and effort, often coordinated through travel agencies or accommodation providers.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Fares: There are no standardized tickets or transport passes. Fares for taxis are negotiated with the driver before the journey begins.
  • Rush Hour: Traffic congestion is heaviest during morning and evening commutes, particularly at the bridge connecting the island to the mainland.
  • Luggage: Standard taxis can accommodate suitcases, but shared minibuses have very limited space; private transport is recommended for those with heavy bags.
  • Accessibility: Public transport is generally not wheelchair accessible. Pavements in the city center can be uneven.
