Basilica of the Visitation, Staré Hory
Overview
The Basilica of the Visitation in Staré Hory is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Protected as a national cultural monument since 1963, the site functions as a notable pilgrimage destination and an example of historical religious architecture in the region.
Getting There
Staré Hory is situated north of Banská Bystrica along route 59. The trip from the Banská Bystrica city centre takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car or regional bus. The area is also accessible via Sliač Airport (SLD), located south of the city.
Time to Allow
Plan for 30 to 45 minutes to view the church interior and walk the grounds. Visitors attending services or walking through the village should allow up to an hour.
When to Go
Weekdays and mornings outside of mass times offer a quieter visit. The church experiences heavy crowds and limited parking during Catholic Marian feast days and Sunday masses. Spring through autumn provides the most reliable driving conditions in the mountainous valley.
