How to Navigate Basel by District

The Rhine divides Basel into two distinct halves. Grossbasel, on the south bank, contains the historic Old Town, the Münster cathedral, and the central Basel SBB rail station. Kleinbasel, on the opposite bank, offers a relaxed river promenade and dining. The historic Mittlere Brücke links both sides, along with traditional cable ferries that cross using only the river current.

Arrival and Local Transit

Direct intercity trains run from Zurich Airport (ZRH) to Basel SBB in about 75 minutes. Within Basel, a dense tram network makes transit simple:

  • Free transit access: Overnight guests receive a transit pass at check-in. Your booking confirmation covers your initial ride from the station to your lodging.
  • Two train stations: Basel SBB handles Swiss and French lines, while Basel Badischer Bahnhof serves German rail. Confirm your departure station in advance.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Buying unnecessary transit passes: Do not buy single tickets upon arrival; your hotel booking confirmation serves as valid transit to reach your room.
  • Station confusion: Mixing up Basel SBB with Badischer Bahnhof leads to missed international connections.
  • Staying only in Grossbasel: Kleinbasel provides the city's best riverfront atmosphere and evening views of the cathedral.

Structuring Your First Visit

Start Here

Begin in Grossbasel to walk the Altstadt, visit the Münster terrace overlooking the river, and explore the central Kunstmuseum before crossing the Rhine.

Save for Later

Suburban venues like the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen or the Dreiländereck tri-border marker can wait until you are comfortable with the tram routes.
