Mount Liamuiga

Mount Liamuiga is a 1,156-meter stratovolcano located in the northwest of Saint Kitts. It is the highest point on the island. Travelers visit this site to hike to the summit, which features a broad crater that previously held a lake.

Getting There

The peak is located northwest of Basseterre. Access typically requires a vehicle to reach the trailhead. The drive from the city center takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on road conditions and the specific starting point.

Time Allocation

Visitors should allow a full day for the experience. The ascent and descent involve steep terrain and dense vegetation, requiring several hours of active hiking to reach the crater and return to the base.

When to Visit

Starting the hike in the early morning is recommended to avoid midday heat and ensure sufficient daylight for the return trip. The weather in the rainforest can be unpredictable, so checking local forecasts for rain is advised.

Nearby Attractions

The area offers several other natural sites that can be combined with a visit to the volcano:

  • Verchild's Peak (2.6km)
  • Bloody River (7.2km)
  • Olivees Mountain (7.7km)
