Gonio Fortress
This site is a Roman-era fortress situated on the Black Sea coast near the border with Turkey. Visitors go here to explore ancient defensive walls, ruins, and archaeological remains from the Roman period.
Getting There
The fortress is located approximately 15 km south of Batumi city centre. You can reach it via taxi or local transport. The journey typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
Duration of Visit
Allow approximately 1.5 to 3 hours to walk through the grounds and examine the ruins.
When to Visit
The site is outdoors, so visiting during the spring or autumn avoids the peak summer heat. Arriving early in the day is recommended to avoid larger crowds. Because of its proximity to the border, be mindful of local regulations regarding photography in certain areas.
