Overview

The Democracy Wall of Xidan refers to a brick wall in Beijing's Xicheng District where posters and essays appeared between 1978 and 1979. This period, known as the Beijing Spring, marked an important phase in modern Chinese history. While the original wall is no longer an active public forum, travellers interested in 20th-century history visit the area to explore the historic setting.

Getting There

From central Beijing, take Subway Line 1 or Line 4 to Xidan Station (about 10 to 15 minutes). Walking west from Tiananmen along West Chang'an Avenue takes roughly 20 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to view the site and appreciate its historical context.

When to Visit

Autumn (September to October) offers mild temperatures. As Xidan is a busy commercial district, streets and stations become crowded on weekend afternoons and weekday evening rush hours. Weekday mornings are best to avoid heavy crowds.
