Maronite Cathedral of Saint George

Located in downtown Beirut, this cathedral serves as the seat of the Maronite Catholic Church. Built between 1884 and 1894, the structure features a Neoclassical façade modeled after the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Visitors go here to see the gilded coffered ceiling and the marble interior decorations.

Getting There

The cathedral is situated in the heart of the city centre. If you are staying in the downtown area, it is accessible by foot. From other parts of Beirut, a short taxi or ride-share trip will bring you directly to the site.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 45 to 60 minutes to walk through the interior and observe the architectural details of the façade.

When to Visit

The site can become crowded during religious holidays and weekend services. To avoid the largest crowds, visit during weekday mornings. The Mediterranean climate makes spring and autumn the most comfortable seasons for walking around the downtown district.
