Mea Shearim

Mea Shearim is the oldest Ashkenazi Jewish neighborhood located outside the Old City of Jerusalem. Visitors go here to observe the traditional lifestyle, dress, and customs of the Haredi Jewish community in a residential setting.

Getting There

The neighborhood is located within Jerusalem. From the city center, it is accessible via local bus lines or taxi. The travel time typically ranges from 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the narrow streets and observe the neighborhood's architecture and daily activity.

When to Visit

It is advisable to visit during weekday mornings to see the neighborhood's routine. Avoid visiting on the Shabbat (from Friday evening through Saturday) or during major Jewish holidays, as most businesses close and the area becomes very crowded with residents. Visitors should dress modestly to respect local customs.

  • West Jerusalem: 0.6km
  • Christian Quarter: 1.2km
  • East Jerusalem: 1.2km
  • Church of the Holy Sepulchre: 1.2km
