Best Seasons: Autumn and Spring

October to November offers the most reliable weather. The monsoon clears out the air, leaving warm, sunny afternoons and crisp evenings. Visibility across the Kathmandu Valley is at its peak. The historic center around Durbar Square and Taumadhi Square is vehicle-restricted, making this the best window for walking on foot. Expect higher guesthouse occupancy during Dashain and Tihar.

March to April brings rising temperatures and vibrant street life. Mid-April is particularly significant due to Bisket Jatra, the Newari New Year festival, where massive crowds gather to pull wooden chariots through the town center. Room availability tightens significantly around this event.

Challenging Seasons: Winter and Monsoon

December to February sees cold nights and chilly early mornings, often accompanied by valley fog that slows traffic from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) along the Araniko Highway. Days are generally clear and quiet, but traditional brick guesthouses lack central heating.

June to September is the summer monsoon. Heavy daily downpours make Bhaktapur's brick-paved alleys slick and muddy. Cloud cover obscures mountain views, and humidity remains high. Unless you are specifically seeking empty temples and lush terrace greenery, avoid this period.

What to Pack and Prepare

  • Footwear: Flat walking shoes with good grip for uneven flagstones and brick paths.
  • Clothing: Modest attire covering shoulders and knees for temple areas, plus a fleece or insulated jacket for cool evenings between October and March.
  • Health and Transit: A dust mask and sunglasses for transit along the Araniko Highway, where road dust is common during the dry months.
