Għallis Tower

Għallis Tower is a coastal watchtower built in 1658 as part of the De Redin tower series. Its original purpose was to guard the coastline of Malta and signal other towers in the network. Visitors go here to see a well-preserved example of 17th-century military architecture and to view the surrounding coastal landscape.

Getting There

The tower is located on the outskirts of Birgu. From the city centre, it is most accessible by taxi or local bus. The journey typically takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Duration of Visit

Because the site is a compact historical structure, most visitors spend between 30 and 60 minutes exploring the exterior and the immediate surroundings.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors, so visiting during the spring or autumn avoids the peak summer heat. Early morning or late afternoon is recommended for better lighting and cooler temperatures. It does not typically experience the same level of crowding as the main city squares.

Nearby Attractions

The tower can be combined with other historical sites in the region. Nearby points of interest include:

  • Buġibba Temple (1.5km)
  • St Mark's Tower (1.9km)
  • Tal-Qadi Temple (2.2km)
  • Victoria Lines (3km)
