About Oude Beursplein

Oude Beursplein is a historic public square in the old town of Bruges that served as a merchants' trading site starting in the 13th century. Tradition holds that the European word for "stock exchange" originates from the name of an inn run by a local merchant family here. Travelers visit to see the site of early European commerce and to walk through the surrounding medieval lanes.

Getting There

The square sits just north of the central market area. It is accessible on foot from the city center, taking roughly 5 to 10 minutes along pedestrian-friendly streets.

How Much Time to Allow

Allow approximately 15 to 30 minutes. As a compact open square, this provides enough time to view the surrounding architecture and explore the immediate street corners.

When to Go

Visit in the morning or late afternoon for lighter crowds, as the area experiences steady pedestrian traffic around midday during peak travel seasons. Any season is suitable for a walk through the area.
