Ryūtōsan Shrine

Overview

Ryūtōsan Shrine, also known as Yongdusan Shrine, was a Shinto shrine that stood in Busan from the late Joseon dynasty through the Japanese colonial period. While the original structures no longer exist, visitors come to see the historic site and learn about the city's colonial-era past.

Getting There

The site is located in the central Nampo-dong area. From Busan Station, take Metro Line 1 south to Nampo Station. From the station, an escalator leads up the hill. The trip takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Time to Allow

Since the shrine is no longer standing, allow 20 to 30 minutes to view the grounds and read available historical markers.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight hours to view the site clearly. The area gets crowded on weekend afternoons, so weekday mornings are quieter. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for walking up the hill.

Nearby Attractions

The site can be combined on foot with several nearby locations:

  • Yongdusan Park (0km): The public park enclosing the site.
  • Busan Modern History Museum (0.2km): Covers the city's modern history.
  • Gukje Market (0.4km): A large traditional market.
