Khan el-Khalili is a historic market in Cairo's old town that has operated since the Mamluk era. Travelers visit to browse a dense network of stalls selling traditional crafts, spices, glassware, and souvenirs. Bargaining on prices is standard practice across the market.

Getting There

From central Cairo, such as Downtown or Tahrir Square, taking a taxi or rideshare takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on street traffic. Metro riders can disembark at nearby stations like Ataba or Bab El Shaariya, which are about a 15-minute walk from the district.

Time to Allow

Allow roughly 2 to 3 hours to walk the main corridors, explore the side alleys, and browse the shops.

When to Go

Late afternoon and evening are the most active times, with cooler outdoor temperatures. However, the market becomes heavily crowded at night. Midday visits are less packed but can be uncomfortably hot during the summer. Winter offers the most temperate weather for walking.
