Overview

Tahrir Square is a major public plaza in downtown Cairo. Known internationally as the primary gathering site during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, it serves as a key landmark of modern Egyptian political history. Travellers visit to see the historic civic space, observe daily urban movement, and orient themselves within the central city.

Getting There

Because it is located directly in Cairo's city centre, travellers staying downtown can reach the plaza on foot in 5 to 15 minutes. It is also directly accessible via the Sadat metro station, which sits beneath the intersection.

Time to Allow

Plan for 20 to 45 minutes to walk the perimeter, view the surrounding civic architecture, and take in the central area.

When to Visit

Morning or late afternoon visits are best to avoid high midday temperatures. As a central traffic hub, the area becomes heavily crowded and noisy during weekday commute hours, requiring extra caution when crossing nearby streets.
