Palm Tree Mosque

Located on Long Street, this mosque is a religious site and a historical landmark. Originally built as a residential house before being converted into a place of worship, it is the oldest building on the street to retain its original architectural form. Travelers visit to see an example of early Islamic architecture in Cape Town and to observe the city's religious heritage.

Getting There

The mosque is situated in the heart of the city centre. From the central business district, it is accessible via a short walk or a quick ride-share trip, typically taking less than 10 minutes depending on your starting point.

Visit Duration

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to view the exterior and the immediate surroundings of the building.

When to Visit

Visitors should be mindful of prayer times, as the site is an active place of worship. It is advisable to visit during the weekdays to avoid the heavier pedestrian traffic common on Long Street during weekends. There are no specific seasonal closures, but weather in Cape Town varies, so dress accordingly for the current season.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the mosque can be combined with several other historical sites within walking distance:

  • St. George's Cathedral (0.2km)
  • Houses of Parliament (0.3km)
  • Auwal Mosque (0.3km)
  • Slave Lodge (0.3km)
