The Slave Lodge

Located in the heart of Cape Town, this site is one of the city's oldest remaining structures. Originally constructed as slave quarters, the building later functioned as a courthouse and government offices. It is now part of the Iziko Museums, where it serves as a museum documenting the history of slavery and the experiences of enslaved people in South Africa.

Getting There

The museum is situated within the city centre. Visitors staying in the central business district can reach the site on foot within a few minutes. For those arriving from other parts of the city, a short taxi or ride-share trip to the city centre is the most direct route.

Visit Duration

Depending on the depth of the exhibits and the visitor's pace, allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the galleries and read the historical documentation.

When to Visit

The museum is an indoor attraction, making it a viable option regardless of the season. To avoid the largest crowds, visiting during weekday mornings is generally more quiet than weekends.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central location, the museum can be combined with several other landmarks within walking distance:

  • Groote Kerk (0.1km)
  • St. George's Cathedral (0.1km)
  • Houses of Parliament (0.2km)
  • Greenmarket Square (0.3km)
