Pigeon Island

Overview

Pigeon Island is a 44-acre landmark connected to mainland Saint Lucia by a causeway built in 1972. Situated off Gros Islet in the northern part of the island, it contains the preserved ruins of an 18th-century British fort set between two peaks. Visitors go to explore historical military fortifications, walk along marked nature paths, and view the ocean from elevated vantage points.

Getting There

From downtown Castries, travel north along the main coastal highway by car, taxi, or local minibus. The drive typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes, though journey times can vary depending on road traffic heading into Gros Islet.

Recommended Duration

Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours exploring the grounds. This allows adequate time to walk to the viewpoints, inspect the fort remnants, and navigate the footpaths without rushing.

When to Visit

Morning and late afternoon are the best times to walk the trails to avoid peak sun and midday temperatures. The site becomes noticeably more crowded when cruise ships are in port and during group tour arrivals.

Nearby Attractions

The site can be combined with other destinations in northern Saint Lucia:

  • Rodney Bay (1.1km)
  • St. Joseph the Worker Church, Gros Islet (1.8km)
  • Bois d'Orange River (3km)
  • Gros Islet Quarter (4.5km)
