Pandanon Island
What it is
Pandanon is a small, low-lying sandbar island in the Camotes Sea, sitting within the Danajon Bank double barrier reef system. There's no real village infrastructure geared toward tourism — most residents are fishermen — but the appeal is the shallow, turquoise sandbar and reef flats around the island, which are good for wading, swimming, and snorkeling over coral and seagrass. It's a spot for a quiet beach day and reef viewing rather than a developed resort destination.
Getting there
Pandanon is reached by boat, not by road. From Cebu City or Mactan, the usual approach is to head to a coastal jump-off point such as Cordova on Mactan Island and arrange a boat crossing, or to join a boat tour that combines Pandanon with nearby islands. The crossing itself is short, but factor in travel time across Mactan to the departure point plus time to arrange a boatman, so allow at least half a day for the return trip from the city.
How much time to allow
A few hours is enough to walk the sandbar, swim, and snorkel. Since there's little shade or built facilities, most visitors treat it as a half-day stop rather than an overnight base.
When to go
Go earlier in the day for calmer water and better light for snorkeling, and check sea conditions beforehand since small boat crossings can be affected by wind and swell. The sandbar's exposed area also depends on the tide, so a boatman's advice on timing is worth following.
Combining with nearby spots
Pandanon sits close to other islands in the same channel, making it easy to pair with a multi-stop boat trip:
- Olango Island (about 10 km away) and the wider Olango Island Group (about 10 km) are known for birdlife and reef areas
- Cuaming Island (about 13 km) is another nearby sandbar/island option
- Mactan Island Aquarium (about 15 km) works as a land-based add-on if returning via Mactan
