Cetinje Monastery

Overview

Cetinje Monastery is an active Serbian Orthodox monastery serving as the seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro. Founded in the late 15th century, it was destroyed during war and rebuilt in the early 18th century. Travellers visit to see its stone architecture, religious relics, and its role as a historic center of Montenegrin spiritual and political life.

Getting There

The complex is located at the foot of the hill just west of central Cetinje. From the town centre, it is a straightforward walk that takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend around 30 to 45 minutes to view the courtyard, main chapel, and interior grounds.

When to Go

Visiting in the morning is ideal to avoid the tour groups that often arrive around midday during the summer peak. Because this is an active religious community, modest attire covering shoulders and knees is required, and access may be restricted during services.

  • Court Church in Cetinje (0.2km)
  • National Museum of Montenegro (0.2km)
