Ōtamahua / Quail Island

Located in Lyttelton Harbour, this uninhabited island is a nature reserve known for visitors seeking untouched scenery and wildlife. Its Māori name refers to a place where children gathered sea urchins. Travellers visit the island to walk along its tracks, observe native birdlife, and view the surrounding coastline of the harbour.

Getting There

To reach the island from Christchurch city centre, travel to the town of Lyttelton. From the Lyttelton wharf, you must take a water taxi or ferry to the island. The total journey, including the drive and the boat crossing, typically takes around one hour.

Duration of Visit

Allow between three to five hours to explore the island. This provides enough time to walk the main loop tracks and observe the local flora and fauna without rushing.

When to Visit

The island is accessible throughout the year, though weather conditions in the harbour can change quickly. Visiting during the morning is often preferred to avoid afternoon winds. It does not typically experience the same level of crowding as mainland city attractions, but boat capacity limits the number of visitors arriving at once.

Nearby Attractions

Because the island is accessed via Lyttelton, you can combine your trip with other sites in the Port Hills area:

  • Te Heru-o-Kahukura / Sugarloaf (4.4km)
  • Port Hills (4.4km)
  • Mount Cavendish (5km)
  • Victoria Park (5.3km)
