Overview

St. Gereon's Basilica is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne, designated as a minor basilica in 1920. Travellers visit to see its distinct ten-sided decagonal dome and Romanesque architecture built on ancient Roman foundations.

Getting There

The site is located northwest of the city centre. Walking from Cologne Central Station takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Local U-Bahn lines also stop nearby at Christophstraße/Mediapark, followed by a short walk.

Time to Allow

Set aside 30 to 45 minutes to explore the interior, the decagon dome, and the crypt.

When to Visit

Daylight hours provide the best natural light for viewing the architectural details. The building rarely gets crowded and remains a peaceful space. Non-worship visits should be avoided during scheduled services.
