Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque

Located in the Pettah district of Colombo, this is one of the city's oldest mosques. Travelers visit primarily to see its distinctive red-and-white striped facade, which makes it a prominent architectural landmark in the urban landscape.

Getting There

The mosque is situated in the Pettah area, which is centrally located. From the main city center, it is accessible via a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride, typically taking 10 to 15 minutes depending on the heavy city traffic.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to view the exterior and the surrounding street activity. Time spent inside may vary based on prayer schedules and visitor access.

When to Visit

The area is a busy commercial hub, so it remains crowded throughout the day. To avoid the peak heat and the heaviest crowds, visiting in the early morning is advisable. Visitors should be mindful of prayer times, as access may be restricted to worshippers during these periods.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its location in the heart of the market district, the mosque can be combined with several nearby sites on foot:

  • Kayman's Gate (0.2km)
  • Pettah Market (0.3km)
  • Khan Clock Tower (0.3km)
  • Colombo Grand Mosque (0.8km)
