Understanding Colón's Layout and Districts

Colón sits at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal. Downtown Colón follows a grid system facing Manzanillo Bay, characterized by historic yet neglected architecture. Directly adjacent is the Zona Libre de Colón, a walled duty-free wholesale hub with controlled checkpoints. Canal infrastructure, including the Agua Clara Locks and the Atlantic Bridge, sits just south and west of the urban center.

Arriving from the Airport and Getting Around

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) is on the Pacific side near Panama City. Traveling to Colón requires crossing the isthmus northward via the trans-isthmian highway or toll road using an authorized taxi, pre-booked transfer, or rental car. Long-distance buses also run from Panama City's Albrook Terminal.

Once inside Colón, avoid walking between districts. Move strictly door-to-door using registered taxis, private drivers, or tour transportation.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

  • Walking the downtown streets: Central Colón has serious safety concerns and is not a pedestrian sightseeing area like Panama City's old town.
  • Treating the Free Zone as a retail mall: The Zona Libre caters primarily to international wholesale trade, requiring passport registration at entry.

A Sensible First-Trip Itinerary

Focus on canal engineering and regional heritage rather than city wandering:

  • See first: The Agua Clara Visitor Center to watch neo-Panamax ships transit the Caribbean locks, followed by Fort San Lorenzo on the coast.
  • Can wait: Portobelo further east, or the Zona Libre unless you have prearranged business meetings.
