City Layout and Districts

Constanța is structured around its relationship with the Black Sea. To navigate it, divide the city into three main zones:

  • The Old Town (Centrul Vechi): The historic core featuring pedestrian streets, cafes, and the Casino. This is the primary hub for sightseeing.
  • The Port and Waterfront: The industrial and commercial heart. The promenade connects the city center to the beaches.
  • The Residential and Commercial Belt: The areas inland from the coast, containing the main shopping districts and administrative offices.

Transportation

Arrival

Most visitors arrive via Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport (CND). The airport is located outside the city; you can reach the center via shuttle buses or licensed taxis.

Getting Around

Inside the city, the most efficient way to travel is via the local bus network. For shorter distances in the Old Town and along the waterfront, walking is the most practical option. Ride-sharing apps are also available for point-to-point transit.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Overestimating the Casino: Many visitors expect to enter the iconic Casino building. It is often closed for interior renovation; view it from the exterior and enjoy the surrounding promenade instead.
  • Confusing Constanța with Mamaia: Mamaia is a resort strip north of the city. While popular for beaches, it is a separate area. Use local transport to move between the city center and the resort beaches.

Suggested First-Trip Itinerary

For a first visit, prioritize these sites in order:

  • First Priority: The Old Town, the Casino building, and the Constanța Aquarium.
  • Second Priority: The Promenade for a walk toward the Black Sea and the local museums.
  • Can Wait: Extensive exploration of the industrial port zones or distant suburbs, which offer less for the casual tourist.
